Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) is not a rash and foolish company, and neither is its CEO, Tim Cook.
So the general condemnation in the media of the possible purchase of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion by the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant seems a bit premature.
While the deal is not official, the news first appeared in the Financial Times and was quickly backed up by stories in most other major financial news publications. If true, which appears very likely, an announcement could come as early as next week.
AAPL stock barely reacted and was down less than 1% in mid-day trading.
Beats, which sells a very popular line of headphones and recently launched a streaming music service, was founded by hip hop legend Dr. Dre and renowned music producer Jimmy Iovine in 2008.

Timing of the transaction completion is mid 2015, following final approval of the BoD, receipt of favorable opinion on tax free status from IRS, shareholder approval, & all regulatory approvals. As a point of interest we have seen several announcements recently where an announcement of the split drives the stocks up 10% and quickly fades as timing sets in and market risk still exists. recent examples [Hertz (HTZ), FMC Corp (FMC), Agilent (A), Noble (NE), CBS (CBS)]. I would expect the stock to fade hard from these levels

Time Warner (NYSE: TWX ) owns HBO. While it is smaller than Starz by subscriber count, the network has a near-flawless record in its recent original productions. Titles such as Game of Thrones, Girls, and True Blood have been tremendous successes in attracting and retaining subscribers. Time Warner trades at 14.12 times forward earnings, but includes many other factors -- from film studio Warner Brothers to theme parks. Showtime parent CBS (NYSE: CBS ) trades at just over 15 times earnings. All three networks have attractive economics as they have pushed original content that, though costly up front, creates better margins over time and saves the company from some difficult negotiations with other content providers. Recently, the company ended its contract with both Netflix and Disney, startling some investors and analysts but ultimately proving a wise decision as it freed up cash to put toward in-house production.
