Evidence continues to mount that the worst of a three-year downturn is fading for the mining industry with the world�� second biggest miner, Rio Tinto Rio Tinto, last week reporting better than expected mineral production for the June quarter, and the world�� biggest miner, BHP Billiton BHP Billiton, expected to match its arch-rival when delivering its June quarter report tomorrow (July 23).
Both companies have become heavily reliant on Chinese demand for iron ore but the highlight of Rio Tinto�� output for the three months to June 30 was a 5% increase in copper production, a performance BHP Billiton is expected to match as both companies rotate their focus away from iron ore to other assets in their diversified portfolios.
Rio Tinto�� expanded rate of copper production impressed analysts at the investment bank, J.P. Morgan J.P. Morgan, which noted that the company had revised upward its guidance for the 2014 calendar year with output of refined copper expected to rise by 15% to 300,000 tons.

The Company�� DSS furnace is a specialized furnace used to melt polysilicon and cast multicrystalline ingots. Multicrystalline ingots are used to produce solar wafers, which ultimately become solar cells. The Company markets its DSS crystallization furnaces under the names DSS450HP and DSS6! 50. The Company's largest capacity DSS furnace, the DSS650, is capable of producing ingots that weigh up to 650 kilograms using standard silicon feedstock. In January 2012, the Company introduced its MonoCast silicon casting technology that uses the DSS furnace architecture to produce ingots comprised of a high percentage of monocrystalline material. Sapphire Business

Relatively few clean-energy-related companies�had strong performances over the past year. GT Advanced Technologies (NASDAQ: GTAT ) plunged 56%, hurt by oversupply in the industry. Some see its long-term prospects as solid, and the stock as undervalued. It's diversifying into sapphire technology, which might supplant Corning's�Gorilla Glass in mobile devices, but it faces some competition there, and few are counting Corning out. A recent new contract�sent GT Advanced Technologies' stock up 12%.

The Q1 2014 earnings report for advanced materials stock GT Advanced Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: GTAT), a potential peer of stocks like Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), UniPixel Inc (NASDAQ: UNXL) and Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: OLED), is due out after the market closes later today.
