NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Sprint (S) is allegedly working to make a potential bid for rival carrier T-Mobile (TMUS) according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The report claims that Sprint is looking into any regulatory concerns that may arise. The carrier could launch a bid worth more than $20 billion sometime in the first half of 2014. The size of the bid would depend on the stake Sprint wants to buy in T-Mobile.

Should the merger go through it would result in a three-carrier wireless industry in the U.S., with the merged T-Mobile and Sprint competing with Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T).

Such a merger may face strong antitrust opposition as in the AT&T attempt to buy T-Mobile in 2011. Sprint stock is up 3.68% to $8.74 in after hours trading.
