Price cutting is easily among Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN ) favorite tool within its e-tail arsenal. The company has just done it again, and this time it's for a top-selling gadget: the Kindle Fire HD.
Amazon has just slashed the price of its flagship tablet down to $169, down from $199, for a 16 GB model. The 32 GB model got a similar reduction and now costs $199. The company says the discounts are for a limited time only, but Amazon has made temporary discounts permanent before. The Kindle Fire HD is currently Amazon's top selling product in the electronics category, and the price reduction will inevitably reinforce that title.
There are a number of reasons Amazon is feeling generous.
The Kindle Fire HD was launched last September, which means the device is approaching the end of its product cycle. If Amazon sticks to its annual timing, third-generation Kindle Fire models would be due out in just two months. In March, Amazon also permanently cut the price of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD model, bringing the entry-level price down to just $269 (following a temporary discount). The company said it was expanding production volumes, which was helping create cost efficiencies and reduce costs. Those savings were being passed along to the consumer. The same should be happening to the 7-inch model too.

Management commentary of Church & Dwight Co. Inc. (NYSE:CHD) clearly suggests another accretive deal is forthcoming, with debt capacity, rising cash balance, halted share repurchase in the fourth quarter and lower capex signaling management is poised to strike while conditions are favorable.

First and foremost, while recessions don't necessitate that P&G lower its pricing on its consumer goods, since we know demand will stay relatively the same, that doesn't stop cash-strapped consumers who are taking home less per paycheck from trading down to non-name-brand products to save money. This was actually the culprit for weaker earnings in recent quarters for both P&G and Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD ) , which were basically forced into a pricing war in the detergent aisle to attract consumers at the detriment of their gross margin.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jim Jubak]
On November 7, Toyota Motor (TM) announced a 70% jump in profits for September quarter. For the period, sales climbed 16%.
The company's New York traded ADRs (American Depositary Receipts) were down 2.6% as of the close. Partly that's because, as great as Toyota's results were, Wall Street had expected even more. Operating profit of 592 billion yen, a 74% increase year over year, was still below the consensus forecast for 617 billion yen. Partly the decline is on disappointment that the company set its interim dividend payout at just 65 yen, when much of Wall Street was expecting 90 yen, or so, a share. And partly the drop is just the normal sell on the news. Toyota ADRs were up 38.6% for the year to date and 59% of the last 12 months as of the close on November 6. Gilead was pilloried again yesterday for developing a drug (Sovaldi) with the highest efficacy and fewest side effects, but at a high (but not the highest) price for a new HCV therapy. The cost-benefit ratio suggests it is not the most expensive therapy in the HCV space. While the politics of Washington are not surprising, the fact that a pharmacy distribution company [Express Scripts (ESRX)] would make what we consider to be political statements is damaging to the industry and patients they serve. They, better than us, understand the benefits of Sovaldi. We view these statements as noise and believe that Sovaldi and next-generation Ledipasvir/Sovaldi represent real pharmaco (economic) value in the HCV space.

Strong results, modest outlook
Rite Aid's profit was driven by three major one-time or short-term impacts. First, the company gained a number of new customers from Walgreen's dispute with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX ) . Walgreen's stores rejoined the Express Scripts network as of Sept. 15, and customers are beginning to trickle back, but Rite Aid still saw a significant benefit from the dispute in fiscal year 2013. On Rite Aid's Thursday morning conference call, executives estimated the full-year benefit at $70 million-- more than half of the company's fiscal year 2013 profit.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA) have dropped 4.6% this month, as investors expressed disappointment over the upstart automaker’s earnings. That drop, says Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas and team, has revived what they call the bear case in the stock, as investors fret about Tesla’s giga factory, profit margins and distribution, among other issues.
Associated PressJonas has a few words for Tesla bears who say “it can’t be done.” Not only has Tesla “been doing it,” its been “doing it pretty well, actually.” Jonas offers a few examples where Tesla is doing it right:
Distribution. he dealer lobby is too powerful.Yet the CEO of the America largest dealer group spoke publicly in support of Tesla captive strategy. Now the FTC has voiced concerns that state laws prohibiting Tesla stores may be harmful to competition.
25% Gross Margin. heyl never do it.Not only did Tesla do a 25% margin in each of the past 2 qtrs, but it achieved a 100% variable gross margin YoY in 1Q. Tesla targets a 28% gross margin by 4Q. Nearly there.
Gigafactory. ou mean giggle-factory? Economies of scale don exist with batteries. If Panasonic signs up to support Tesla vertical integration of battery manufacturing at 10x scale, one would have to wonder how Tesla could possibly convince them to do such a thing.
Shares of Tesla have gained 1.2% to $194.48 today, all the more surprising considering that the S&P 500 has dropped 0.2% today, while General Motors (GM) has fallen 1.1% to $33.87 and Ford Motor (F) has dipped 0.1% to $15.90.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
One way or another, PVH (PVH), the owner of Calvin Klein and other fashion brands, is going to move a lot when it releases its financial results on Sept. 3. Morgan Stanley’s Jay Sole and Joseph Wyatt explain:
We believe PVH 9/3 2Q EPS is a highly anticipated event with a wide range of potential outcomes. We expect more volatility than the +/- 5.4% move the options market is pricing in…
A solid beat could send PVH towards $130: The stock is down 14% YTD vs. flat for the median Softlines name and trades at a 1-turn discount to its 2-year average 16.8x FY1 P/E multiple. A 2Q beat with guidance showing stabilizing US sales and material Warnaco-integration progress would positively catalyze shares in our view.
A low-quality 2Q result with 3Q guidance below consensus could push the stock under $110: Consensus entered CY14 modeling $8.15 for PVH FY14. Today the Street models $7.38. Many feel bad news is out of the way. A report suggesting sales are choppier than expected or Warnaco needs incrementally more investment would likely negatively surprise.
PVH has dropped 0.6% to $116.75 at 2:03 p.m., leaving it with 11% upside or 5.8% of downside.

Getty Images From a door-to-door selling icon stocking up on blush after a disappointing quarter to several hotel chains checking in with strong occupancy trends, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Hotels -- Winners Hoteliers were apparently hopping during the first quarter. Despite the iffy weather and the equally iffy economy, the leading chains reporting this week posted surprisingly robust activity. Revenue per available room is a key metric because it tracks occupancy levels as well as prevailing overnight rates. The industry's doing well when RevPAR is positive, and that's just what we saw with this week's reports. Choice Hotels (CHH), Marriott (MAR), and Hyatt (H) clocked in with RevPAR increases of 5.6 percent, 6.3 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively. Twitter (TWTR) -- Loser Shares of Twitter hit an all-time low this week after the company posted disappointing user growth. Sure, the "all-time low" remark needs to be accompanied by the caveat that Twitter has only been trading publicly for less than six months. It's still a grim milestone for last year's most anticipated debutante. Twitter's revenue growth was fine, propelled by the recent success of its monetization initiatives. Its outlook was upbeat. However, the one thing that haunted investors this week was that Twitter had just 14 million more unique monthly visitors than it had a quarter earlier. That kind of sequential uptick would've impressed at most companies, but Twitter trades at a juicy premium to the market. #Letdown. J.C. Penney (JCP) -- Winner The struggling department store operator isn't out of the woods just yet, but at least one supplier is offering up encouraging insight. PVH (PVH) was presenting at an investor conference in Miami earlier in the week when its CEO offered up an encouraging perspective.
